It is important to understand the importance of oral hygiene and how dental conditions can arise due to lack of good oral hygiene. Understanding promotes good habits. Not only is this important for adults but most of all for our children! As adults we send a message, whether we want to or not, about how we feel about dental care. So let us begin with some basics, what exactly does the word oral hygiene refer to? Oral hygiene, simply put, refers to the routine followed to ensure that our mouth and teeth remain clean so we can avoid dental problems and of course maintain our great smile.

But now we ask; what exactly should those habits consist of? Originally we were taught to brush your teeth daily. As the years progressed it became brush your teeth after every meal. Of course as medical advances continued so did the daily oral hygiene ritual. Flossing was then added to the menu of good daily dental habits to maintain. So was that it? No, we then moved on to improved toothpaste and flavored dental floss. Then of course we had mouthwash added to our daily formula for good oral hygiene habits. And when we thought it was all over, miscellaneous oral hygiene tools were added to the package.

The advent of various dental cleaning tools brought oral hygiene to a professional level. Now with all our great tasting toothpaste and mouthwash, and all the great cleaning appliances available, no one should have a problem right? Wrong. Unfortunately many still suffer from serious dental conditions that could have been avoided with good daily oral hygiene habits!
