Maternity Health Coverage

Many individual health insurance policies do not include maternity health coverage or sometimes individual health insurance consumers have the option to pay extra for maternity coverage.

If you are planning a family soon, it’s important to know what your current health insurance coverage will provide you and your baby, and what options are out there if you can’t get coverage under your current health plan.

What are your health insurance options if you are already pregnant? Many insurance providers will not approve a new application or a request to change to a plan that does cover maternity. If you do not have coverage or your plan does not cover maternity, you may want to ask your agent about guaranteed issue health plans or even a discount health plan which may provide some savings on maternity expenses. You may also want to inquire about government-funded maternity insurance programs both at the state and federal levels.
