Tooth Discoloration

Causes of tooth discoloration

There are many causes for tooth discoloration.

There are two main types:

Extrinsic - which is caused by substances we put into our mouths or consume.

Intrinsic - which are caused by certain conditions in the body that determine tooth formation or color.

Tooth discoloration can be caused by such things as smoking cigarettes or cigars or by a recurring consumption of certain foods that contain a great deal of pigment such as soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, most varieties of berries, cherries, and curry.

Additional causes for tooth discoloration are; consumption of too much coffee, wine or colas, being highly exposed to tetracycline antibiotics and to the aging process.

Genetics can also determine tooth color, not everybody’s teeth are the same shade of white.

Tooth discoloration can be very disturbing for many and a tooth whitening procedure or cosmetic dentistry solution should be discussed with your dentist.
