What is EPO Health Insurance

EPO Health Insurance Plans

EPO stands for Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)- This type of insurance plan allows access to health care from a network physician, facility or other health care professional, including specialists, without designating a primary physician or the need for obtaining a referral.

An EPO is a much smaller than PPO group. EPO health insurance plans offer a very limited number of providers who offer large discounts on their rates. As a member of an EPO, you can use the doctors and hospitals within the EPO network, but cannot go outside the network for care. There are no out-of-network benefits.

Should you consider purchasing EPO Health Insurance?

An EPO Health Insurance Plan can work for you if:
  • You do not want to get a referral to see a specialist
  • You want to receive a much lower negotiated rate with an EPO plan than you would with an HMO or PPO plan
